Thomas served in Lutheran education for almost two decades before joining the faculty of Australian Lutheran College. During this time, he held a range of leadership and governance roles, including extensive experience as a principal in Lutheran schools across Victoria and South Australia.
Following undergraduate studies in Music, Drama and Education, and postgraduate studies in Theology, Thomas commenced his teaching ministry in Adelaide before accepting a call to serve as a missionary in the Middle East. While there, he assisted in leading a school for African refugees and lectured in theology and education at a refugee Bible college. Working in contexts marked by displacement, trauma, and cultural diversity has significantly shaped his approach to education and his ongoing interest in questions of justice, vocation, and the availability of Lutheran schooling to all members of Australian society.
At Australian Lutheran College, Thomas is involved in the formation of educators and church workers, drawing on his experience in both school leadership and theological study. His teaching encourages students to reflect critically on the ways Lutheran theology informs professional practice, particularly in school settings.
Thomas is currently completing doctoral research focused on Lutheran theology, Australian Lutheran schools, and social justice. His research interests centre on the dialogue between Lutheran theology and Lutheran schooling, with particular attention to how theology is expressed through leadership, policy, and everyday educational practice.
In addition to his teaching and research, Thomas serves on the Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand’s Commission on Theology and Inter-church Relations, contributing to the church’s theological reflection and engagement with ecumenical partners. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors course and has served in governance roles across several not-for-profit organisations.
