Course Overview

The Master of Theology enables students with an undergraduate degree in theology or ministry to apply an advanced body of knowledge in theology and its associated disciplines. Students deepen their engagement with select areas of study to prepare them for professional practice and further learning.

Course Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Theology:

  1. have advanced knowledge of sources, terms and concepts required in theology and its related disciplines
  2. have mastery of research principles and methods, including analytical and communication skills applicable to theology and its related disciplines
  3. have advanced skills of interpretation and critical reflection on a range of theological and related disciplines, with awareness of implications and applications to historical and contemporary issues and contexts, in order to generate and evaluate ideas for professional practice and further learning
  4. articulate and communicate knowledge and insights in theology and its related disciplines to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  5. apply relevant theological and hermeneutical skills through the execution of a substantial research-based project, capstone experience, theological synthesis or supervised ministry project.

Course Structure

The Master of Theology consists of 240 points.

Course Structure
Up to 48 points of postgraduate foundational units in any discipline
Either:

  • A capstone unit (at least 24 points)

Or:
Further postgraduate elective units in any discipline

Minimum Academic Requirement

One of:

  • Bachelor of Theology
  • Bachelor of Ministry
  • Master of Divinity
  • Enrolled in BTheol or BMin at University of Divinity with at least 378 points completed. BTheol or BMin must be completed within 12 months of admission to Master of Theology.

Note: A Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma is insufficient for the purposes of admission to the Master of Theology.

Probationary admission is not available for the Master of Theology.

The Master of Theology requires completion of 240 points (10 standard postgraduate units).

Fees for 2026 are $3,384 per standard unit or $20,304 for a full-time year (6 units). The total cost of the course at 2026 fees is $33,840.

Credit of up to 120 points may be granted towards this award.

Credit is granted in accordance with the Credit Policy.

  • Face-to-face: This is the traditional mode of study where you attend your classes in person at a physical location.
  • Online: In this mode, teaching and learning activities are delivered online.
  • Mixed-modes: This combines both face-to-face and online units throughout your award.
  • Intensive: this involves completing a condensed amount of content over a shorter period of time. Intensives can be face-to-face or online.
  • Supervised Research: This involves independent research, which is supervised by one or more people with expertise in the field.

Course Duration

The standard full-time duration of the Master of Theology is two years. The Master of Theology must be completed in not less than three semesters and not more than five years.
