Very Rev Dr Kevin Lenehan

BA, BTh(Hons), GradCertHE, MRelStud, MTh, STL, STD, PhD

Kevin is recognised in Australia and internationally as a leading scholar and presenter on topics emerging from the interaction of Christian theology and its contemporary contexts. His work is influenced by the Catholic ressourcement scholarship of the mid-twentieth century as well as Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s writings and engagement with German Protestant theology. His doctoral research was published as Standing Responsibly Between Silence and Speech: Revelation and Religion in the Thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and René Girard (Peeters, 2012) and a number of his papers have appeared in international publications.

Kevin’s research interests lie in the theology of revelation, Christian faith in a post-Christendom culture, sacramental theology and theological anthropology, Bonhoeffer studies, and Catholic Education in a pluralist context. He is currently researching a reframing of M.-D. Chenu’s theology of the signs of the time within the practices of Christian discernment in a pluralist society.

Kevin’s teaching includes the units Introducing Catholic Theology, Theology of the Human Person, Introduction to Philosophy for Theology, Theology of the Eucharist, Enhancing Catholic Institutional Identity, and Doing Theology: Engaging the Catholic Theological Tradition.

He has supervised over a dozen MTheol and PhD dissertations, in topics from systematic theology, pastoral theology and religious education. Kevin is eager to discuss prospective research students about HDR projects in any of his areas of expertise.

Kevin is an alumnus of the KU Leuven Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, and a member of several scholarly associations, including the Australian Catholic Theologian Association, the Australian Girard Seminar, the Australian Bonhoeffer Conference Committee, and the European Society of Catholic Theologians. From 2014-2017 he was Editor of Pacifica: Australian Theological Studies and is an Editorial Board member of The Bonhoeffer Legacy: Journal of Bonhoeffer Studies.

Kevin regularly contributes to theological education and faith formation with Catholic dioceses and agencies throughout Australia. He was a member of a Discernment and Writing Group and will be a Delegate at the Fifth Plenary Council of the Catholic Church in Australia 2021-2022.
